Choosing a Laser
What is the difference between diode, CO₂ and fiber lasers?
Diode lasers are mainly used for wood, coated materials and hobby cutting; CO₂ lasers are strong on wood, acrylic, leather, glass marking and many non-metals; fiber lasers are optimized for metals and some plastics. MOPA is a fiber-laser variant with wider pulse control for more specialized marking results.
How many watts do I really need?
Required power depends on the material, thickness, production speed and whether you engrave or cut. More watts do not automatically mean better detail; spot size, optics, pulse behavior and machine quality also matter.
Which laser is best for metal engraving?
For direct engraving and marking on metals, fiber laser is usually the most suitable choice. MOPA fiber gives additional control for applications such as black marking and color effects on selected metals.
Should I buy a laser or outsource the work?
Compare expected monthly volume, turnaround time, training needs, maintenance, consumables and capital cost. Outsourcing is often safer for low volume; ownership becomes attractive when repeat volume, customization speed and margin justify the machine.
Photo Engraving
How do I prepare a photo for laser engraving?
Set the final physical size first, crop the composition, correct exposure and contrast, clean distracting background areas, then choose grayscale, threshold or dithering according to the material and laser process. Avoid applying arbitrary DPI before you know the real engraving resolution.
How do I engrave a photo on wood?
Wood usually benefits from controlled contrast and a dither that matches the machine resolution. Test on the same wood batch because grain, resin and moisture can change the result considerably.
How do I engrave a photo on metal?
Metal photo engraving depends strongly on the laser type and surface. With fiber lasers, image preprocessing, line or dot density, focus and parameter stability are critical. A test matrix on the exact material is preferable to copying settings from another machine.
Why does my engraved photo look too dark?
Common causes are excessive dot density, too much energy per area, low image brightness, over-aggressive contrast or a mismatch between DPI and the real laser spot size. Reduce one variable at a time and retest.
Dithering & Grayscale
What is dithering in laser engraving?
Dithering converts tonal information into a pattern of black and white dots that a binary engraving process can reproduce. Different algorithms distribute dots differently and therefore react differently on wood, metal and other surfaces.
Which dithering method is best?
There is no universal best method. Stucki, Jarvis, Floyd-Steinberg and other algorithms can produce different texture and tonal balance. The best choice depends on material response, spot size and desired appearance.
Dithering or grayscale?
Use dithering when the laser process behaves primarily as on/off marking. Use grayscale only when your machine and material can reproduce controlled intermediate energy levels consistently.
When should I use threshold?
Threshold is useful for logos, high-contrast graphics, stencils and artwork where you want a clean two-tone result rather than photographic tonal detail.
DPI, Resolution & Size
What DPI should I use for laser engraving?
Use a DPI that matches the machine's practical spot size and the material response. Higher DPI can increase heat accumulation without adding real detail. For many photo workflows, testing around the machine's real optical resolution is more useful than chasing a large number.
How many pixels per millimeter do I need?
Pixels per millimeter are simply another way to express image sampling density. The useful value depends on the physical engraving size and the machine's achievable resolution.
Does higher DPI always improve quality?
No. Once image sampling exceeds what the laser spot and material can reproduce, additional DPI mostly increases overlap, heat and processing time.
What resolution do I need for a small engraving?
Start from the final physical dimensions, then calculate the pixels required for the selected practical DPI. Small engravings need clean source detail and controlled contrast more than simply huge source files.
Files, Vector & SVG
What file format is best for engraving?
Raster images such as PNG and JPG are common for photographs, while SVG and DXF are better for vectors, outlines and cutting paths. Choose the format according to the operation, not by habit.
How do I convert JPG to SVG for laser use?
A JPG cannot become a clean vector merely by changing the extension. It must be traced or vectorized, then cleaned to remove noise, duplicate paths and unnecessary nodes.
Why does my SVG have double lines?
Double lines usually come from strokes expanded into outlines, duplicate paths or tracing both edges of a thick shape. Inspect the vector structure and remove duplicate geometry.
Where can I find free laser engraving files?
Use reputable libraries and always verify licensing before commercial use. PixGrav's public gallery can be used as a starting point for laser-ready resources.
Wood & Wood-Based Materials
How do I avoid burn marks on wood?
Use appropriate speed and power, clean air assist, correct focus and, when suitable, masking. Excessive energy density or poor smoke extraction increases scorching.
Why does the same wood engrave differently?
Wood is not perfectly uniform. Grain direction, glue, resin, density and moisture vary even within the same sheet or batch.
Why did my laser cut the wood yesterday but not today?
Check lens cleanliness, focus, mirror alignment, air assist, material moisture and actual laser output before changing the job settings.
How do I find the right settings for a new wood?
Use a small controlled test grid with speed and power as the main variables, while keeping focus, air assist and material batch constant.
Metals & Fiber/MOPA
What does frequency do on a fiber laser?
Frequency changes how often pulses are delivered. Together with pulse energy, pulse width, speed and hatch spacing it affects heat distribution, marking behavior and appearance.
What does pulse width do on a MOPA laser?
Pulse width changes how long each pulse lasts and therefore changes peak power and heat interaction. This is one of the reasons MOPA systems can tune certain black and color-marking processes more precisely.
Why do identical metal parts engrave differently?
Surface finish, alloy, coating, focus, temperature, fixture position and process stability can all change the result. Treat repeatability as a full process-control problem, not only a parameter problem.
How do I create a black mark on stainless steel?
A black mark depends on laser type, pulse behavior, focus and material. MOPA systems usually give more control, but the correct recipe must be established with tests on the exact alloy and finish.
Glass, Mirror & Special Materials
How do I engrave glass without cracking it?
Use a process appropriate to the laser type, avoid excessive localized heat, keep the surface clean and test on the exact glass because composition and internal stress vary.
How do I engrave a mirror?
Mirror engraving can be done from the coated back side in many workflows, but the exact method depends on coating and laser type. Always test the specific mirror construction.
Which plastics are dangerous to laser?
Unknown plastics should not be processed blindly. PVC and vinyl-containing materials are especially problematic because they can release corrosive and hazardous chlorine-containing gases.
How do I know what an unknown material is?
Use supplier documentation, labels, safety data sheets and reliable material identification. A burn test is not a safe substitute for knowing the material chemistry.
Focus, Lenses & Optics
How do I find the correct focus?
Use a repeatable focus test or ramp test and measure from a known machine reference. Do not rely only on nominal lens distance because mechanical and optical tolerances can shift the true focus.
What changes with a longer focal-length lens?
A longer focal length generally increases working distance and field/depth characteristics but usually gives a larger spot than a shorter lens. The tradeoff is field and tolerance versus fine detail.
Why is one side of the engraving different?
Check surface flatness, lens/galvo calibration or CO₂ beam alignment, focus consistency and fixture height. A small Z difference can materially change the result.
When should I change a laser lens?
Replace a lens when damage, coating deterioration, contamination that cannot be cleaned, or optical distortion affects performance. Do not replace a good lens only because of age.
CO₂ Laser
How do I align CO₂ laser mirrors?
Alignment should verify beam position through the optical path at near and far travel positions. Adjust one stage at a time and use low-power test pulses with appropriate safety procedures.
What water temperature should a CO₂ chiller maintain?
Follow the tube manufacturer's range and avoid condensation. Stable coolant temperature is usually more important than chasing the lowest possible number.
Why does my CO₂ laser lose cutting power?
Common causes include dirty optics, poor alignment, focus errors, cooling problems, tube aging, power-supply issues and material variation.
How long can a CO₂ laser run continuously?
Continuous runtime is determined by thermal control, tube specification, cooling system, duty cycle and machine design. A stable cooling system and manufacturer limits matter more than a fixed universal number.
Diode Laser
Why can't my diode laser cut clear acrylic?
Most visible-blue diode lasers pass through clear acrylic rather than being strongly absorbed. CO₂ wavelength is much better absorbed by clear acrylic.
Can a diode laser engrave bare metal?
It usually cannot engrave bare metal in the same way as a fiber laser. Some metals can be marked with coatings or surface treatments, but that is different from direct metal engraving.
Do I need air assist on a diode laser?
Air assist is useful for many cutting and engraving jobs because it clears smoke and reduces flame and edge staining, but the required flow depends on the process.
How do I avoid fire when cutting with a diode laser?
Never leave the machine unattended, maintain extraction and air assist, keep the work area free from flammable debris, and keep an appropriate extinguisher nearby.
LightBurn, EZCAD & RDWorks
How do I engrave a photo in LightBurn?
Prepare the image at final size, choose a suitable image mode and interval, then tune speed and power with tests on the exact material. Image preprocessing and machine parameters must be treated together.
How do I engrave a photo in EZCAD?
Use a properly prepared bitmap or vector workflow, confirm image mode, resolution and marking parameters, and test on the real material. Avoid assuming settings from EZCAD2 will behave identically in EZCAD3.
Why does my image appear solid black in EZCAD?
This can come from image import settings, thresholding, bitmap mode, transparency handling or an incorrect processing mode. Check the source image and import parameters before changing laser power.
Why does the laser follow a strange path?
Path order may be determined by object order, layer rules, optimization settings, nesting or vector geometry. Clean geometry and deliberate cut/mark ordering reduce unnecessary travel.
Test Grids & Parameters
What is a laser test grid?
A test grid is a controlled matrix of parameter combinations, commonly speed and power, used to compare results on the same material under repeatable conditions.
Why should I create a test grid?
It replaces guesswork with evidence from your own machine, optics, material batch and environment. This is more reliable than copying settings from the internet.
Should I copy settings from another laser?
Use them only as a starting reference. Machine power, optics, focus, material, calibration and controller behavior can make the same numeric settings produce different results.
How do I build a material preset library?
Record material identity, supplier/batch, thickness, lens, focus, speed, power, frequency/pulse data where relevant, air assist and the date of the test.
Troubleshooting
Why is my engraving blurry?
Check focus, mechanical play, image resolution, scan speed, lens condition and whether the source image has been over-smoothed or upscaled poorly.
Why do I see horizontal lines in the engraving?
Possible causes include line interval mismatch, mechanical vibration, belt or motion issues, image-processing artifacts and power instability.
Why is my circle oval?
Check X/Y calibration, steps, rotary configuration if used, mechanical scaling and whether the design was distorted before import.
Why does the engraving shift or lose position?
Inspect belts, couplings, acceleration, fixture stability, controller settings and whether the machine is missing steps or slipping mechanically.
Calibration & Maintenance
How often should I clean laser optics?
Inspect them routinely and clean only with appropriate optical methods when contamination is present. Over-cleaning with the wrong materials can damage coatings.
How do I check X/Y accuracy?
Engrave or cut calibrated test shapes, measure them with a suitable instrument, compare X and Y independently and correct only after confirming there is no mechanical slippage.
What should I check regularly on a laser machine?
Optics, cooling, extraction, air assist, belts or linear motion, electrical connections, fixture condition, safety interlocks and the cleanliness of the work area.
How do I know if a CO₂ tube is getting weak?
Compare cutting/engraving performance under controlled conditions, verify optics and alignment first, and measure electrical/optical output with appropriate equipment when possible.
Safety
Why do I need laser safety glasses?
They reduce exposure to hazardous reflected or scattered laser radiation at specific wavelengths. Correct wavelength coverage and optical density are essential; generic tinted glasses are not sufficient.
Is it safe to watch the laser engraving process?
That depends on wavelength, enclosure, viewing window rating and reflections. Never assume observation is safe simply because the beam is not directly visible.
Why do I need fume extraction?
Laser processing can create smoke, fine particles and hazardous decomposition products. Effective extraction protects both people and machine optics.
Can I leave a laser running unattended?
No. Fire risk can develop quickly, especially when cutting combustible materials. Active supervision and appropriate fire-safety equipment are essential.
Rotary & Cylindrical Objects
How do I engrave a tumbler with a rotary?
Set the correct rotary type, steps/rotation or equivalent calibration, object diameter, focus and orientation. Run a low-risk framing or test before the final engraving.
Why is my rotary engraving stretched?
The configured circumference/diameter or steps-per-rotation is wrong, or the rotary is slipping. Measure the object and recalibrate.
Why is the rotary image reversed?
Rotary direction or axis inversion is set incorrectly. Correct the direction in software/controller instead of mirroring every design manually.
How do I focus on a tapered object?
A tapered surface changes Z height across the engraving. Reduce the engraved width, reposition the object, or use dynamic focus/3D compensation where the hardware supports it.
Production & Repeatability
How do I keep engraving quality consistent in production?
Standardize material, fixture, focus, presets, cleaning, warm-up and inspection. Record deviations instead of compensating randomly during production.
How do I make many identical pieces?
Use a repeatable jig or fixture, fixed origin, documented presets and a first-piece inspection before running the full batch.
How do I reduce failed parts?
Use controlled tests, material identification, first-piece approval, maintenance checks and parameter libraries. Most scrap reduction comes from process discipline, not from a single magic setting.
When do I need a second laser machine?
Consider a second machine when capacity, downtime risk, incompatible process types or production bottlenecks cost more than the machine ownership and operating cost.
Durability of the Result
Will laser engraving fade?
True material removal or structural marking is generally durable, but coatings, paints and surface-color effects can wear differently. Durability depends on the substrate and marking mechanism.
Does engraving wash off?
It depends on whether the laser altered the base material or only removed/changed a coating. Test the exact product under its expected cleaning conditions.
Should engraved wood be sealed?
For decorative use, sealing can improve stain resistance and appearance. For food-contact items, use only finishes appropriate for the intended use and local requirements.
Is engraving suitable for outdoor use?
The engraving may be permanent while the material or coating around it is not. UV, moisture, corrosion and finish quality determine outdoor durability.
Cost & Business
How should I price a laser engraving job?
Include material, machine time, design/preparation time, labor, consumables, rejects, overhead, depreciation and profit. Pricing only by machine minutes usually misses real costs.
Should I charge per minute, piece or area?
Use the model that best reflects your cost structure. Production pieces often work well with per-piece pricing, while custom design and setup should usually be charged separately.
How do I calculate machine cost per hour?
Include depreciation, financing where relevant, expected service life, maintenance, electricity, cooling, extraction, consumables and realistic productive utilization.
Is a laser engraving business profitable?
It can be, but profitability depends on product selection, repeatability, sales channel, utilization, labor and differentiation. Equipment alone does not create margin.
